Hutterites derive their names from Jacob Hutter, a 16th-century Anabaptist leader who was instrumental in organizing groups of believers into functioning communities. He and other believers advocated communal ownership of property and a radical following of Christ. Hutter was burned as a heretic in Innsbruck in 1536.
Many believers are of German descent and still use their native tongue at home and in church. Little denominational literature has been produced by Hutterites recently and most of the extant material such as sermons and songs is in the German language. Colonies share property, practice non-resistance, dress plainly, and operate their own schools. There are close to 500 colonies with about 50,000 members in North America. Each congregation conducts its own youth work through Sunday school. Until age 15, children attend German and English school which is operated by each colony. All unbaptized youth ages attend Sunday school. They are baptized as adults upon confession of faith, by their own personal choice.
